A battling 8th place in the World Open Water Champs for swim legend Val Mclaren - a water temperature of 28 degrees and sun burnt face and shoulders added to the difficulties! Val says that the single 3km lap was made more challenging for her by the first buoy being 1.2km away - slightly further than her eyes could focus! Apparently she’s going to spend the winter working on strength training to make the most of her excellent technique - true champion dedication! I’m sure others of you have… More....

A couple of great performances to report this week; Juhana Kirk has been showing his speed again and sent the following; Just a few lines to say I did the Ashdown Forest Triathlon recently based at Cumnor House School and organised by Hedgehogtri. Course was more or less standard distance: 600m swim, 40k bike and 7.5k run. Somehow I managed to come second in a time of 1:54.30! Very unexpected. The bike course was fast and great fun, although pool and run laps slightly took the shine off, but a… More....

Three main bits of News this week, including a truly epic story from our Far East correspondent “Little” Dave Spence. But first news of another epic race result from the running machine, Juhana Kirk: Apologies for my recent absence at Saturday swimming, I have had a few weeks of excessive food and beer having completed the South Downs Way 100 mile Ultra on June 10th. Nine very hardy (foolhardy?) members took on the WGP Duathlon event last Sunday morning in temperatures hovering just above zero! Heros everyone of them! It was actually the run route that proved to be slippery with just the usual appaling road surface through Ashurst Wood to contend with! Honours went to Rich Traynor in the mens, just holding off the fast finishing Rob Bream – which made his dash back to get his forgotten bike shoes worthwhile! Can you believe it? You sometimes wait weeks for club news and then you get two in a week! What is going on? Well of course its a subtle way of me reminding you of the need to help out at the Race Recce this Saturday from 9.00am either cycling or running around the tri routes with the newbies who will be coming along to Kings looking to have their fears allayed by a bunch of experienced and friendly triathletes – but in the absence of any of those they will have to put up with as many of you as… More....

    Weekly News 28 April 2015

Late news in that Mr Chairman has decided to award a CVSP for the overall 2015 WGP to Alex Langridge. Just about every event was a first time for her and she should be justifiably proud of her efforts – we all are! Well done Alex! Huge congratulations to Keith Roberts on completing the London Marathon in a very well judged 4:16 on Sunday – one can only imagine Jane's relief as he crossed the finish line! Recently ex-EGTC member Louise Saville also finished in a fine 3:28. Great job well done to… More....

Thanks to all of you who took part in the WGP Triathlon yesterday – sorry the weather was a bit miserable! Thanks also to those who came along to lend vocal support and my personal thanks to Mr Chairman for the coffee and to Keith for helping to ensure you all went the right way on the run! Of course as I write this Keith is preparing to carry not only his own personal extra hod of bricks but also the weight of responsibility as the official EGTC entrant around the London Marathon - all the… More....

    Weekly News 25 April 2015

So not many hours to go before the big finale! If you've not done a WGP tri before then you'll obviously be impressed by the transition area – which is “old school” with bikes propped against the fence or parked cars and run shoes on any spare bit of tarmac! With a mass start you'll know exactly where you are against your fellow competitors – so red line from the start! In the pool at 7.30am to warm up and I'll be around outside to keep an eye on kit from 7.00am onwards. Some help with length… More....

Bizarrely the only time this week to write the news is by not coming along to Kings this morning! Hope you all enjoyed splashing about? I'm off for a run around Tilgate Forest this afternoon and mountain biking on the South Downs on Sunday – so not doing nothing! A first ever DNF for both Andy Peel and Annie Sedgwick as they both succumbed to injury during the run section of the Sprint event – you can feel the disappointment and frustration in every word of Andy’s Race Report which is on the club website – tough luck Andy. After being quick enough to bang on about how important the wellbeing of OUR race is to the club, I think it is only right that I am as quick to pass on the praise. The smooth running of the weekend obviously depends on you guys rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in. Whole range of things to tell you about this week….. Starting with something to make you green with envy – Derek Blackall is still in racing mode, competing in the Aix en Provence 70.3 races. He tells me that he briefly raised himself off his sun lounger in St Tropez to finish in 7:12 and then returned to a horizontal position and carried on watching the scenery and people pass by! Thanks Derek, not jealous at all…. Meanwhile, back in sunny East Grinstead, thanks to all those who both competed… More....

    October Swim Smooth Sessions

If you haven’t been in the club for long; it’s worth noting that we cease hard training at the end of September and go ‘back to basics’ with a strong focus on correct technique at club sessions. It is crucial for us all to have a period of recovery following the end of season and low intensity ‘Aerobic’ and ‘Technique’ sessions continue during the autumn, then intensity increases during the winter and harder efforts are introduced during springtime to be ready for the start of the next racing… More....

On Friday, Martin, Fran, Richard and Annie did exceptionally well to stay upright on their bikes in very slippery conditions whilst on Saturday, Mark, in the open event, contended with a very cold swim which on Sunday led to Jackie, competing in the Olympic distance race having her swim leg cut to 800m. Mission Accomplished! Under strict instructions from Mrs Big Dave I successfully failed to qualify for Hawaii @ Xterra England by cleverly finishing plum last in my Age Group on Sunday at the Vachery Estate. I did however finish with an aching face from grinning so madly for two hours whilst tackling the 30k off-road bike course! The subsequent 10k run was also fun and involved some seriously tricky off-road running and jumping – streams, ditches and bogs! It also threw it down with rain for… More....

One very useful tip comes from Coach Martin - bring an old t-shirt and/or drag shorts to ALL swim sessions from now onwards as it's time for a bit of resistance work in the pool. Remember that baggy old cotton T's work best for this - race shirts from pre-1980 according to Martin! Main news item this week from Darren Howe and the EGTC Knacker Krackers...... Weekly News 27 December 2012

So, hope you all got what you wanted for Christmas? Personally, my best pressie arrived today (Thu 27) when I had a 30 minute appointment with the magical fingers of my osteopath, Jeff, as I put my back out on Christmas morning and have spent the two holiday days in considerable pain - well beyond the scope of the self-medication I was able to take in a prone position! As you might imagine my predicament was not well appreciated at home - but at least I wasn't out training! in fact, it looks… More....

I wonder if in a few years time the club's own (sorry Nick/Charmaine if that's a bit propritorial) young Bradley will be as loquacious in accepting his first EGTC Winter GP trophy? Of course his dad might beat him too it with no IM distractions this year....... As you have to be in it to win it here's a reminder that The Perch is the first event in the 2013 WGP so… More....

    MTB Ride 25 November 2012

After the monsoon of Saturday nine MTB'ers gathered on a lovely sunny morning in the car park at Holmbury St Mary. The trails were "damp" which made conditions testing, hard work and in places, riders skills were tested in staying upright. With Big Dave being absent there were no major spills, but plenty of minor "offs" led by the club's very own Mr Tumble. 'If this isn't fun I'm blaming you!' I shout as we set off on our mountain bikes in pursuit of a load of proper cyclists aboard their lightweight, skinny tyre mounts! I swear some… More....

Another Fantastic East Grinstead Triathlon: Sunday 16th May 2010

To mark the occasion of the 25th East Grinstead Triathlon, the Club invited some of the competitors who had taken part in the very first race in 1986. Dirk Van der Starre, who was the manager of the Olympos leisure centre in 1986, which remains the venue of the event, even made the journey from The Netherlands on the condition someone lent him a bike! The Anniversary race was won by East Grinstead Tri Club's very own legend Martin Darlison, in a time of 1hr 14 min. Martin couldn't remember… More....

EGTC Winter GP: Sprint Tri 2010 - update

Congratulations to Tim Lucas in winning the club's Winter GP Sprint Triathlon (1:12:30). The race was held over the same Sprint Tri course that will be used for May's open event. A close run race for second went to veteran Martin Darlison, when Noel Miles having been confused by the clear instructions given to him by the club chairman, went the wrong way at the finish. (Steward's enquiry gave Noel second place thanks to adjusting his run time) First lady to cross the finish line was Joan… More....

    They can run too!

Proving that at least some triathletes are good runners, East Grinstead Tri Club won the first team prize at the Epsom Oddballs Perch. Neil Smith was third finisher overall, supporting him in the team was Tim "boy" Lucas [11th] and Noel Miles [13th]. A number of other club members also completed the hilly course. More....

25 years on - where are they now?

There has been a wave of triathlon nostalgia in recent times, with British Triathlon celebrating their 25th anniversary and some clubs and events reaching the same milestone of late. The East Grinstead Triathlon Club is one such club and from its modest beginnings with just 55 competitors in its first event, will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary East Grinstead Triathlon on 16 May 2010 with a limit of 500. In order to make this year's event a bit special, the club is looking for some help in… More....

    "Buying a better result[?]"

Readers Questions "I've had a well structured training programme (almost down to the day) ever since last November. My main focus is an Olympic distance at the end of July. I've done a Sprint Tri as a benchmark and also a couple of time trials. Frankly, my times are a little disappointing. I've seen some 2008 model bikes going for decent prices and am considering "buying a better result". My current steed cost me £1500 6 years ago - there's nothing wrong with it - just wondered how much faster… More....

    EGTC Training Camps

As you'll recall I said I'd get back with some ideas and suggestions on potential training camps following a bit of investigative stuff on the web and chats with various people! What I've come up with is merely a snapshot of what's available out there and doubtless I've missed some fairly obvious choices and even ignored some others for purely personal reasons! And it's with this personal choice that I think we should start. What exactly do you want from this period that you are setting aside… More....

East Grinstead Sprint Tri 2009: A real race!

To add some spice to this year's race, we've decided to make a race of it! "What's that?" we hear you ask, "I thought I was entering a race?" We turned the clock back a bit. Even though our race is pool based, we thought that for the fastest 12 entrants, into the Sprint Tri, there would be a mass start. This was right at the end, after all the other competitors have started. As King's is a 6 lane pool, this meant 2 per lane. The bike section was still non-drafting. The rolling nature of the… More....

The Club will be staging an internal triathlon on April 18th [i.e. for club members only]. This will enable us to fill the gap in our Winter GP series and allow us to trial the timing chip technology that we are using for the EG Triathlon in May. We may not have use of all the results equipment but it will be a sufficient dress rehearsal before the main event. We will require a few helpers to facilitate the running of this event, so anyone not racing let Dave W know! More....

We ask if any of you work for a company or know of a local business that might be intrested in supporting the 2009 East Grinstead Tri! It doesn't matter how small the contribution to the competition may be - even entering a 'work' team would help swell competitor numbers. All support for the race will be given as much exposure as possible. We are going to have weekly articles in the local paper advertising the race. The competion has been listed in all the triathlon fixture media. We are hoping… More....
