How entering a triathlon could change your life!

Entries to the East Grinstead Triathlon, taking place on Sunday 13th May, are now open. The event, now in its 33rd year, is a great opportunity to test your fitness whether you are an experienced triathlete or looking to try out the sport for the first time. And it could be a decision that changes your life.

Jane Roberts, of East Grinstead first took part in the Lady’s Try-A-Tri race (200m swim, 11km cycle and 2.5km run) in 2013. After her father suddenly passed away after suffering a heart attack Jane decided she needed to improve her own health and fitness.

Five years later and she is the club’s social secretary and has gone from strength to strength: “I have now completed two half-iron distances races (1.9km swim, 113km cycle and 21km run), which I could never imagined doing five years ago.

“The club is incredibly supportive and full of members of different shapes, sizes and abilities! And there is a superb social aspect as well. Signing up for the Try-A-Tri and then joining is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Another member who joined the club after taking part in the triathlon in 2016 is Dave Flynn. Dave says both the sport and club have had a profound impact on him.

“I suffer from anxiety, caused by post-traumatic stress disorder so coming to the club and introducing myself to a bunch of strangers was a big thing. But right from the start the club looked after me and treated me as one of their own.

“I went from struggling to swim 400m to being able to swim 2km non-stop. The sense of achievement has had a great effect – I’m not just physically improving but mentally improving. Without running or the Tri club I would not be where I am now.

My mental health and vastly improved as well as my physical health.”

Consisting of a 400m swim, 26km cycle and 5km run (with shorter youth and Lady’s Try-A-Tri distances available) the challenge is one that consistently sells out so get your entries in quick.

Triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK - according to a survey by the Triathlon Industry Association, the UK triathlon industry has grown by 57 per cent since the Rio Olympics.

In a survey of 5,529 athletes, 37% of respondents stated that they had only taken up the sport in the last three years.

East Grinstead Triathlon Club, one of the longest running clubs in the UK, has built a reputation of being one of the most friendly and inclusive clubs, welcoming competitors of all abilities.
