First things first. As you may have noticed this is not a missive from Big Dave. This is "Trying to get smaller Dave" (aka David Pawsey, Dave P, whatever you want to call me!)

Having been a member of the club for five years it's been a weekly pleasure to receive Dave's informative updates of what's been going on around the club. So this is rather a bittersweet moment for me.

Me being handed the controls of the weekly email is just one of a number of changes that you will be seeing over the next few months as the new committee settles into its role.

It perhaps goes without saying that as a club we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the previous committee, which has done a sterling job of running both the club and the East Grinstead Triathlon over the last few years.

So I'm sure the new committee, and the club as a whole, will join me in thanking Richard Merry, Dave Watmore, Clare Collet and Cathy Walsh for their tireless efforts. It's very much the intention of the new committee to build on their fantastic work and take the club from strength to strength.

One of the aims of the committee is to build on the fantastic community spirit of the club, which I'm sure you'll hear a lot more about in the coming weeks.

We also want to be a lot more proactive about sharing your achievements both within the club but also further afield. So please don't be shy in letting us know what you're up to this season - whether you are taking part in your first event or qualifying for the World Championships.

So to give you all the opportunity to embrace the amazing EGTri community spirit I have a few dates for your diaries/electronic devices. So I’ll give you a minute to get your diaries at the ready.

Got them? Great, now get writing/typing.

Christmas run on Ashdown Forest 23rd December - it's part of the EGTri tradition for us to head to Ashdown Forest, don some silly festival garb and take a social off-road jaunt instead of a coached session.

It would be great to see as many of you as possible (I can't make it due to childcare duties so perhaps an extra incentive to go?!). Please post in the Facebook group if you would like to come but do not have transport and something will be arranged.

Turners Hill Boxing Day run - My favourite race of the year because I can walk to it but I know this is a bit of a favourite for EGTri members.

A great opportunity to do some damage limitation over the seasonal period! There is a link to “register interest” but from previous experience you can enter on the day.

Vale Gallop 10k – 28th January This is the first event in the Winter GP (and the only one that you have to pay a bit extra for on top of club fees (you can enter HERE).

For new members the Winter GP is a bit of friendly competition among your fellow club members. As I see it, more importantly, it’s a fantastic opportunity to assess your fitness compared to the previous year (or for new members set a baseline for the coming year).

And how often do you get the opportunity to take part in a duathlon, triathlon or a swimming or cycling time trial without having to cough up some extra cash? More details can be found in the members area of the website. Again, it would be great to see as many of you as possible getting involved in these events.

EG Triathlon – 13 May 2018 – I’m sure this is a date that’s already seared into your memories as well as your diaries but this is possibly the most important date in the club’s year.

So please try not to book any races/holidays/weddings/baptisms/or any other celebrations for this weekend. Putting on the race is a huge undertaking but, it goes without saying, the more of us that are there (to set up on the Saturday, marshal and take everything down on the Sunday) the easier it is.

And you get supplied with an amazing snack bag, get a huge sense of wellbeing from supporting your club and fellow triathletes and in the half a decade I’ve been a member of the club it’s never rained.

So please put this in your diary now, otherwise Big Dave (who has taken on the role of race director) will be battering down your door.

So on that note, in the words of the great man himself, train safe.
