So, October is racing away and I trust you are all enjoying the various Oktoberfest sessions – both in the pool and beyond? My thanks to Simon for running last week's Bike Handling session and this week you get the chance to bounce around on a bed! Our own Trampoline Coach, Tracy Caudle, will be on hand to ensure safety and pass on a few tips as well as explain the vital difference between a barani and a biryani! Be in the Main Hall @ Kings for 8.15am prepared to work hard and laugh harder!

The following Saturday (29 Oct) sees us relaxing in the backroom of the cafe area with a Cake, Kit and Chat session! Lots of delicious things to eat, free EGTC goodies to give away, fellow members unwanted kit items to buy or swap plus advice and guidance from the coaching team on your racing or training plans for 2017 – see you from 8.30am onwards?

Two other dates to remind you of at this point; Sun 30 October EG Aquathon – volunteer via Pete or Karen and Sat 19 November EGTC AGM and Prize Giving – 9.00am in the Pavilion @ Kings

At the recent EGTC Committee meeting we discussed at some considerable length the 2017 East Grinstead Triathlon and we felt it was important to advise all members of the decision we reached prior to it appearing on the club website. The following, in general outline, is the message that will go out from Race Director and Club Chairman, Richard Merry, when the 2017 EG Triathlon goes on sale at the start of November;

Following feedback over the last few years from competitors, volunteers and other stakeholders the decision has been taken to make changes to the format of the East Grinstead Triathlon races in 2017.

The safety of our competitors, volunteers and other road users has been our primary concern and we feel that the changes we are to introduce will positively reduce the risks to all parties.

The swim distance in the Sprint race will be reduced from 500 meters to 400 metres and in the Ladies Try-a-Tri from 250 meters to 200 metres. The rationale behind this change is not to give an advantage to less strong swimmers but, paradoxically, to level the playing field on the cycle leg! Those who know the East Grinstead area will be aware of the major new housing developments and road layout changes that have occurred over the years and the substantial increases in traffic volumes that have resulted? For our race this has led to significant difficulties and increased risk on the cycle leg particularly in Moat Road (immediately after the start of the cycle routes) and in the villages of Ashurst Wood (for the Try-a-Tri) and Hartfield (for the Sprint). Reducing the swim distance will mean that the cycle section should be completed by all competitors approximately one hour earlier than in past races. With less traffic on the road your ride time could be less and should certainly be safer?

Over its 30 year plus history, the East Grinstead Triathlon has changed many times (as some who are still on the Race Committee and where involved in the very first race constantly remind us!) and so whilst we cherish its tradition we need to acknowledge the world and public roads we are now racing on are not the same? As previous supporters or potential new competitors in our race I trust you will accept the changes we are making and we look forward to seeing you at the 32nd East Grinstead Triathlon on Sunday 14th May 2017

That's it – Train safe if at all?
