So, Oktoberfest is here and I for one thoroughly enjoyed last week’s Swim Smooth session - thanks Tom for the explanations and your patience with those in the lane who are a bit slow on the uptake! This slowness was further illustrated later that morning in my trudging around the 5km Park Run at Tilgate in Crawley! A considerable period of time elapsed between Andrew Drake’s 19:07 for first EGTC member home (10th overall) and my own 27:35 and last EGTC member back! If I’m going to get back into this running lark after all the long distance walking it’s going to take some effort! Top efforts from the future Mrs Welch (why Kelly why?) as first overall female and an excellent PB from Mark Lofting which has thrown his current winter training plan off somewhat! Definitely something I’ll go and do again at some point in future and I’d recommend to any of you as worth a try.

So, still to come this October;

Sat 8 Oct 8.00-8.45am Dance Studio – Kettlebells for Beginners, with Jan away we've asked Ollie to come along and give us an intro to improving our cardio, strength and flexibility using these weights. Guaranteed to be a fun session given the general inflexibility of most of us!

Sun 9 Oct – Women on Wheels event at Cyclopark, Gravesend. Karen Mycock is organising car shares to get there and back so talk to her and take a look on website for details

Sat 15 Oct 9.15-10.15am Top Floor Station Car Park – Bike Handling Skills. Bring along your road or mountain bike, helmet etc and get advice and practical tips from cycle coach Simon Neeve who has provided the following outline for the morning;

Based around the stuff I did on my mountain bike leader course I have put some ideas together for the 'slow bike event', or ' not falling off in corners' or 'not falling off going down hill' or ' don't do what I do but what I suggest'. Of course none of these titles are indicators of future performance and management take no responsibility for you doing anything daft in the future!

Topics to be looked at will be, and in no particular order:

Not having to unclip when you get to a roundabout to let just one car past - starting to track stand.

Safe cornering, braking and principles of turning which will, with practice, enable  going quickly downhill around a hairpin bend.

Riding safely, incredibly slowly and not having to put your foot down all the time, eg in traffic

Cycling accurately through tight gaps (avoiding potholes  and traffic)

Bunny hopping over potholes.

Getting as close as possible to the rider next to you, in preparation for group riding.

Maybe some other stuff if we have time.

Everyone attending should bring a spare pair of shoes so that they don't have to worry about unclipping when practicing

Warm clothing will be  a good idea as we won't be working up a sweat - other than through fear and/or laughter!

Helmets are obligatory.

Sat 22 Oct 8.15-9.15am Main Hall – Trampoline with Tracy! If you've never tried bouncing on a proper trampoline then this is the session for you! I'd suggest long running tights and two pairs of socks!

Sat 29 Oct 8.30-10.00am Backroom of Cafe area – Cake, Kit and Chat! A social morning sampling some superb home made cakes and bread, swapping or selling any of your unwanted kit/gear and asking our top team of coaches for advice on training or racing in 2017! In addition, there is a quantity of FREE EGTC stuff that we will be giving away - so come along and fill your boots,stomachs and heads!

Finally some reminders for your diaries;

Sun 30th October - East Grinstead Aquathlon - let Pete Holley or Karen Mycock know if you are available to assist with this event. Starts at 8.00am so volunteers required a while before that to set up but generally finished by around 10.00am and then all off to Bluebells for breakfast!

Sat 19th November 9.00am - EGTC Club AGM and Prize Giving. As always this will be in the Pavilion with a quick run through of club matters from this year and for 2017 followed by free bacon rolls etc and the chance to celebrate the many racing achievements of club members in 2016 - be there!

Train safe (if at all at this time of year?)
