A rather sombre note to start this weeks News with the following from Head Coach Martin Darlison;

Some very sad news reached me that Jane Boulton died recently following a battle with cancer.  Jane was a EG Tri member back in the 90s and some of you will remember Jane very fondly.  Jane was a very giving person and would do anything for anyone, she was our first run coach!

Jane was a very talented athlete too, not only winning Triathlons all over the place, but qualifying for the London Marathon elite women’s start.  Jane held the club marathon record for some years with a 2:52 and was ranked in the top 5 vets in the UK.  Jane was as humble as she was talented and would always praise others for their achievements rather than reflect on her own.

In more recent times, Jane was a big part of the Triathlon and Running scene in Crowborough together with a group of our friends who all used to be a part of EG Tri when we were about the only club in the South East!  Our thoughts and best wishes are with Jane’s family and friends; Annie, Claire, Joe, Roger and with all those who have been fortunate enough to have been able to share time in Jane’s company.

I would echo Martin's view as I recall Jane leading us on hill reps up past the hospital and being very kind about my lack of running ability then and no doubt she would have been just as polite about my lack of improvement since? The funeral will be at 11.00am on 29 February at St John's in Crowborough. There is very limited parking at the church so please park nearby and walk if you are going to attend.

On a brighter note Martin adds, Val McLaren told me that she has qualified for the European Masters Swim Champs in 200m & 400m.  In my excitement I failed to ask when & where but just checked on line and its at the London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park 25-29 May.  The detailed schedule is not yet available.  Huge well done to Val and the first time an EGTC member has achieved this to my knowledge!!

One of the things I'm sure Jane would have done in her time with the club was the WGP Swim/Run which will be held this Saturday morning. Unfortunately it looks like the weather is improving as the week goes on! Nevertheless, the 500m swim and near 5km run to the Feldbridge Hotel and back will still be a stern test and I'm sure you will appreciate the encouragement to be supplied by Mr Chairman at the turnaround point? We generally let you have a few minutes in the pool to warm up and then a mass start in your lanes at around 7.40am. Go on, you know you want too? If you don't then either swim at 6.30am or be prepared to get out of the pool for a few minutes and help count lengths!

Slight alteration to the Vale Gallop standings as I believe there may have been a “ringer” in the results? Wine for top lady finisher now goes to Kat Pearce and overall WGP placings have been changed accordingly.

Finally, my thanks to Fran and Gary for hanging around at the top of the hills on Sunday's ride and waiting patiently for me in the cold! Don't forget the March 2nd Sunday Ride is the Burgess Hill Sportive – so get your entry sorted!

Train safe...
